Building the Perfect Storage Space with IKEA Furniture

Marketing Department • Feb 16, 2019

Many of you have heard of IKEA, the manufacturer that designs and sells ready-to-assemble furniture. IKEA was founded in 1943 in a remote area of Sweden. Residents learned fast how to take an innovative approach to solving problems every day.

This IKEA innovative concept lives on today as they continue to combine function and design in their products. The good news is that IKEA's furniture can also double as creative storage for those homes that are "space-challenged. Finding effective spaces for storage doesn't have to be a headache. Your challenge is to maximize the space you do have. Even if space is small, you can still create storage where you can easily retrieve items that you need every day.

Read more about how to use these IKEA storage hacks to make your home more roomy and comfortable.

IKEA Storage Hacks

The beauty behind IKEA products is that they let you expand beyond their original uses to leverage the spaces throughout your house in an efficient way. Take IKEA cabinets for example. There are plenty of IKEA storage cabinet models that you can use in ways other than for just holding dishware or bath towels. Here are some examples:

Mudroom Storage Bench

You can recycle an IKEA cabinet or two (or four!) to create your own mudroom bench with extra storage underneath. Just follow these steps:

  1. Prime and paint your cabinets. When they've dried, place them side by side and make sure they are level with each other. Tweak differences in height by sanding down the cabinets' feet.
  2. Measure the top of the cabinets to create your flat bench top surface. Add 2" to the front and sides of your flat surface. That way, you'll have a lip that extends beyond the edge of the cabinets.
  3. Attach two 4x4 blocks to the cabinet tops to create support pieces for the bench top. You can attach these blocks with wood glue to the cabinet's top corners.
  4. Cut eight 3" wood pieces for bench feet. Place each foot under the IKEA cabinets with wood glue. Also screw them into place from the inside.
  5. Attach the flat top surface with wood glue to the support pieces. Make sure the flat top surface is centered and square. Insert screws into the support pieces from the inside of the cabinets.

This storage will be perfect for all those stray shoes and school backpacks that invade your entryways.

Bedside Storage

Is your dream IKEA bedroom cramped for space? Then it's time to get clever and install IKEA kitchen cabinets as floating nightstands. Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Build the IKEA cabinet exterior according to the IKEA instructions. Leave off the doors and inner shelves. Measure and mark where the cabinet should attach to the wall.
  2. Measure and cut the suspension rails that come with the cabinets to fit your intended space. Attach the cabinet to the wall per the included instructions.
  3. Attach the cabinet doors and insert inner shelves last.

This floating nightstand can help create valuable storage space (underneath the floating nightstand.) It will also help you organize those go-to supplies you need to send you off to a good night sleep.
